Hello darlings, I’m Elyse and I’m one half of this beautifully impromptu blog project. The other half is Clara, you can find her intro post here.
I’ll tell you a bit about myself in this post of course, but to start, let’s just jump right in to who Clara and I are, what this project is, and why we’re here. Clara and I went to graduate school for film studies together and during our time there we found that not only were we both adorable and brilliant, but we both had a knack for having opinions about things. Especially movies. After screenings and lectures we would regularly linger for hours in the hallways, in parking lots, and diners (for a good old fashioned breakfast special late at night, of course) to discuss the movie we had just seen, or an article we had just picked apart.
Now that grad school is over and our theses are finished and bound, Clara and I found ourselves missing each other as well as those great discussions we had with our classmates. What I’ve always loved about Clara is how bold and fearless she is in her assessments and opinions. Anyone who had a class with us could vouch for the fact that if Clara had any qualms about a screening or an assigned reading, you’d be sure to hear about it. But she’s by no means just a “hater,” her initial feelings are always quickly backed up by examples, sources, and an even-handed explanation. She challenges me to be critical and thorough, and reminds me that honest, respectful discourse doesn’t require people to have the same opinions. Hopefully you’ll like what we have to say here, but even if you don’t, there’s always another movie to talk about.
Now, as promised, a bit about myself:
- Liberal weenie (feminist, anti-racist, LGBT-friendly, you know the drill)
- Late 20s
- Film Nerd
Let’s start the show.
